About Us


The Gateway Association of Payroll Professionals (GAPP) established its roots on 27, September 1984, when eighteen very enthusiastic payroll professionals met and determined a need for a payroll organization. Linda LaPlante, of Sisters of St. Mary's Health Care System, was the driving force in gathering this group and hosted the first meeting. Linda was also the St. Louis Chapter Coordinator for the American Payroll Association and through that organization received guidance and sponsorship for our local organization.

Our group flourished during those early days and the attendance and interest grew as word spread about the local payroll group. A Steering Committee, Membership Committee, and Planning and Education Committee were established. Officers were elected at the 7, December 1984, meeting. They were President - Linda LaPlante (Sisters of St. Mary's), Vice President - Bob Zuroweste (McDonnell-Douglas), and Secretary/Treasurer - Joan Griffin (Olin Corp.). By the end of 1985, the membership had grown to 93 people. The organization's constitution was adopted on December 9, 1986, and the Gateway Association of Payroll Professionals was officially born.

Over the years GAPP had distanced itself from the American Payroll Association. However, in the spring of 2001, GAPP leadership invited APA spokespersons to present the advantages of affiliating as an APA chapter. The ongoing support and recognition of chapter endeavours that would be afforded was attractive to the leadership. On June 15, 2001, GAPP became affiliated with the American Payroll Association and proudly became the local St. Louis chapter of the APA.

The Gateway Association of Payroll Professionals is an organization of payroll people with a common goal to continually develop innovative payroll skills through education, shared knowledge, solutions to challenging issues, and promoting high ethical standards and professionalism in the business environment. The membership currently consists of 141 active members from around the St. Louis area and represent companies with as few as three to more than 110,000 employees who all share common challenges met with topical speakers and "round table" discussions at our monthly meetings. The true value of this organization lies in its members, Payroll Professionals.

GAPP membership dues are $75 per year and memberships begin on the date of registration.  Members receive automatic renewal notices prior to their membership terms expiring.  We currently have 128 members receiving  benefits of membership.

Our meetings are held eleven times a year typically on the third Thursday of the month at the Clayton Plaza Hotel.  The meeting fees are $15 for members and $25 for guests. For your convenience, we accept VISA, Master Card and Discover.  Attendance averages between 40 and 55 and the meetings provide an opportunity for education and networking.  Our meetings and events provide Recertification Credit Hours (RCH's) for both CPP and FPC certified professionals; over sixty percent of our membership is certified.
